Benzonia Academy Lecture Series: Witchcraft

In Calendar, Culture Bluffs on February 11, 2014 at 11:16 pm

What better way to prepare for Valentine’s Day than to learn about extremely poor communication among men and women of the early modern period?

What: The Hammer of Witches: Witchcraft in the 16th and 17th Centuries, a lecture by Dr. Louis Yock

When: Thursday, February 13, 4PM

Where: Benzie Area Historical Museum, 6941 Traverse Ave., Benzonia

First published in 1487, and republished through 1669, the Hammer of Witches was a popular handbook used by authorities for discovering and prosecuting witches. While no longer used by authorities, and little known by the public, its instructions are nonetheless the basis for many painful episodes in European and American history, and still informs the popular imagination. Dr. Yock received his MA in medieval history and PhD in modern history at the Gregorian University in Rome, and was an adjunct instructor teaching philosophy at West Shore Community College until becoming director of the Benzie Area Historical Museum in 2007. A suggested $5 donation  is appreciated. This lecture was first given as a Benzonia Academy Lecture in May of 2011.
